A brand new year, a brand new decade and you , just just like me, probably have a heart full of brand new hopes and aspirations. A new year is significant in that God established the concept of rhythms, seasons and time; and just as the sun announces new mercies every morning, the arrival of a new year reminds us that our current situations are not permanent. Things change, stories evolve and our hope in Christ continues to carry on with refreshed vision for the future.
One such rhythm we embrace as a church family is participating in the global Every Nation week of prayer, fasting and consecration. Starting this Sunday, we will journey together through the theme of “Amazing Grace” – to discover again the new day mercies He has promised at the start of this new year. Even though seasons, calendars and expectations change, God never does and the Gospel story of Amazing Grace is still the same, filled with endless depths of hope and encouragement to carry us in 2020.
Fasting, the discipline of abstaining from food for a short season to seek God through prayer, worship and the Word, is a powerful way to realign spirituality, emotionally and even physically. Fasting is never easy, and sure it is never fun, but it comes with a force of promise behind it that God will meet us as we draw near to Him during such a time.
CS Lewis, in His book “Mere Christianity”, wrote: “God made us, invented us as a man invented an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other.”
And the psalmist wrote:
“You satisfy me more than the richest feast.” Psalms 63:5
Join in from Sunday as we feast on God throughout the week. As we keep awake and reawaken our soul appetites after Him, we will truly be satisfied and our hearts will burn with the only “fuel” that can see us through the year ahead.
Please also note, there will be early morning prayer during the fast: Monday – Wednesday, 06h00 – 07h00, and corporate prayer on Thursday evening 18h30 – 20h00– at the Living Room.
For a fasting guide, please go to https://www.everynationfast.org/ and read the section titled “Preparing for the Fast”.
